On 14 May, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Righteous Among the Nations in honour of the people who saved Jews from the Nazis during the Holocaust.
On this occasion, an interfaith prayer was held in Babyn Yar, and a memorial installation with portraits of Ukrainians whose families risked their lives to hide Jews during the Second World War was installed on the Alley of the Righteous.
The commemorative events were attended by the Righteous and their families, religious leaders and representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky and others.
The honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations was conferred on 2659 Ukrainians who did not betray the ideals of humanity while saving the Jewish population from the Nazis.
For the third year in a row, the Babyn Yar National Historical Museum, together with the Julia Goldenberg Charitable Foundation "For Your Sake", has been organising an interfaith prayer and commemoration of the Righteous, Ukrainians, on the Alley of the Righteous.
This year we updated the information stands on the Alley so that all visitors could read the stories of the Righteous from all over Ukraine.
The event began with the words of Vasyl Nazarenko, Righteous Among the Nations. His parents, sisters and he rescued Ethea and Beti Yadushliver. They risked their lives and knew that they could be killed for it. People learned that this was a feat and that it should be talked about when Ukraine became independent. And the people who rescued had no weapons in their hands, they had only their conscience.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Ukraine, Michael Brodsky, said that if the Righteous had not saved Jews during World War II, there would probably have been no State of Israel.
